Welcome to SGMF
SGMF is a non-governmental, membership-based organisation providing independent expertise on the safe, responsible and sustainable use of low and zero carbon marine fuels.
We are more than a maritime energy society. We pioneer global transformation by delivering trusted, science-backed guidance that supports the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner fuels.
Our role is to remove complexity from sustainable fuel adoption, enabling organisations to focus on what they do best; whether operating vessels today or innovating tomorrow’s transport solutions.
Our mission
To create a clear, practical and achievable pathway to cleaner fuel adoption, while maintaining the highest standards of safety.
What we do
Our core activity is guiding the industry on the safe, responsible and sustainable use of low flashpoint fuels. We do this by developing fact-based, best-practice guidance, including guidelines and checklists that support real-world application.
We collate, refine and share expertise from across our membership and provide support to all stakeholders involved in the rapidly expanding clean sustainable fuels value chain.
Our members
SGMF represents over 150 international member organisations, including ship owners and operators, energy majors, port authorities, fuel suppliers, equipment manufacturers and classification societies. Each contributes specialist knowledge across the fuels covered by SGMF.
Fuels we cover
- Ammonia

- Methanol
Our global role
SGMF’s profile and global reach have earned us consultative status with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and observer status at the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP). These roles reflect our position as a trusted, independent voice within the global maritime and energy communities.
